Recipient of Military Cross

Leonard Bowman Robertson MC, husband of Edna Robertson, of Calgary, Alberta, and formerly of Miramichi (Chatham), New Brunswick, passed away peacefully at home, in Calgary, as a result of Lung Cancer, with his family at his side, at the age of 90.

Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, on October 19, 1918, he was the son of the late Leonard B. and Louisa R. (Ives) Robertson. He was a retired and long serving employee of the Lounsbury co. Ltd., entrusted with the position of Motor Branch Manager of the Chatham, New Brunswick location. He was a long time and active member of St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi; a Member of Session; a Senior Elder; former Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher; a former Trustee of his church; a former member of the Board of Stewards; a former member of the men's choir; a member of the N.B. Branch of the Highland Society; a member of Branch #18, F&AM; a member of Branch #3, Royal Canadian Legion, Miramichi; also a former member of the Miramichi Golf & Country Club, the Newcastle Curling Club, Chatham Curling Club, Chatham Jr. Chamber of Commerce. The Rotary Club of Chatham recognized his life of action, compassion and service to school, church and community by nominating him as their Paul Harris Fellow in 2004.

He was a Veteran of the Second World War. In early 1944, he volunteered for service in the British Army under a program named Canloan, and served with the 2nd Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Division of the British Army. He was in the first wave that landed in France on D Day. He was subsequently awarded the Military Cross for action in Normandy on June 28, 1944.

He is survived by his wife, the former Edna E. Bell; one daughter, Janet Champion (John), of Calgary, Alta.; two sons, Leonard B. Robertson (Laysha), of Delta, B.C. and Ian D. Robertson, of Edmonton, Alta.; one sister, Louise Bongard, of Toronto, Ont.; four grandchildren, Richard Robertson and Michael Robertson (Deja) and Timothy Champion and Barbara Hyciek (Dave); five nephews; two nieces. He was predeceased by one son, Roy W. Robertson; one sister, Ocenia Robertson; one brother, James I. Robertson.

Memorial service held at McInnis and Holloway's Crowfoot Chapel, in Calgary, on Saturday, April 25th. Memorial service held from St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi, on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, later in the spring.
