Mr. Robert M. Langenfeld, age 88, of Kohler, passed away on May 10, 2009.
Bob was born on February 9, 1921 to Adolph L. and Olive (Heus) Langenfeld in New Holstein.
He attended public grade school in New Holstein and graduated from St. Norbert High School, DePere, WI, in 1939. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. After basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Base, Bob was assigned to the Navy Photo Recognition School at Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.
Upon his completion, he was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Grosse Isle, MI, where he became a photographer's mate for both ground and aerial photography. He was then assigned to the Staff of the Commander of the Forward Area, under Admiral Nimitz, which was headquartered at Guam. His tour of duty in the South Pacific ended at the end of the war in 1945. He was then assigned to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL, followed by a short assignment at the Naval Air Station in Washington, D.C. He was discharged in February of 1946.
Upon returning home from the service, he went into business with his father at Associated Fur Farms, Inc., in New Holstein.
He married Manitowoc native, Pauline Lois Zeman on June 28, 1947.
In 1969 he started Silver Moon Foods, Inc., which produced and delivered ready mix feed to mink farmers throughout the Midwest. He sold the business to the National Food Company in 1990. In 1969, Bob organized with four other mink farmers to form Silver Moon Processors, Inc., a mink pelt processing company. At its peak the plant processed over 300,000 mink pelts a year for the fur market. With the decline of the mink industry the company was dissolved in 2000. Bob remained active in the fur industry until his death, sharing in its operations with his son and grandson, 3rd and 4th generation mink men. During his lifetime in the fur industry he traveled world-wide as an invited consultant to fur farmers in various countries.
Bob served on the board of directors of many fur organizations including; Mutation Mink Breeders Association, Great Lakes Mink Breeders Association, United Mink Producers Association, and the National Board of Fur Farm Organizations. He was also a board of director for; Peoples State Bank in New Holstein which later became M & I New Holstein, Lakeside Foods, Manitowoc, Associated Fur Farms, Inc., J.E.T., Inc., Silver Moon Foods, Inc., Silver Moon Processors, Inc. Lang-Gor., Inc., A. L. Langenfeld, Inc. and Todajeem, Inc.
Bob had a love of travel, geography, map reading and driving. He was an avid sports watcher and an "okay" golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Pauline, Kohler; one son, R. Todd Langenfeld, New Holstein; two daughters and sons-in-law, Emmy L. and Henry F. White, Chicago, IL, Jane L. and C. Skip Pfeffer, Manitowoc; two grandsons, Shaw C. (Casey) Langenfeld, New Holstein, Maxwell T. Langenfeld, New Holstein; one great-granddaughter, Natalya J. Langenfeld, New Holstein; one sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Gregory Pauly, New Holstein; two sisters-in-law, LouAnn Langenfeld, New Holstein, Jane Protz, Savannah, GA.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard J. Langenfeld; and two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, William Protz and Edward and Marion Schuessler.
Cremation will take place with burial of the cremated remains at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
