Carl H. Hauber, of Naples, Fla., passed away on his 77th birthday, Aug. 4, 2008. He was born in Elmhurst, Ill. on Aug. 4, 1931 and lived in the Chicago area until he and his beloved wife, Wanda, retired to Naples in 1999.

Carl was educated at the University of Illinois Law School from which he received his J.D. degree and spent his career in association management, first as Executive Director for the American Oil Chemists Society, then for the American Dental Hygienists' Association, and retired, after 20 years, with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Carl was an active supporter of his profession and served his professional associations, the American Society of Association Executives and the Chicago Society of Association Executives, in leadership roles for many years.

He received the Key Award and the Samuel B. Shapiro Award among other distinctions, and was awarded a Presidential Citation from the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives.

Carl was a man of many interests. He was a founding member of the Underwater Society of America and received the coveted NOGI Award in 1960 and again in 2005, as well as awards from the Underwater Club of Canada and the Ontario Underwater Council.

He had a simultaneous military career in the U.S. Air Force Reserve which extended over 30 years with primary service at O'Hare Field in Chicago and Scott AF Base in St. Louis, Ill. He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1991.

A major passion of Carl's was his endless interest in all aspects of World War I. He collected memorabilia for over 50 years, and in 2006 he and Wanda incorporated the Museum of Military Memorabilia, Inc. as a 501)(c)(3) organization to preserve military artifacts, present information to the public and honor those who have served freedom. The museum is in the process of securing a "home."

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Wanda; his mother, Susan of Naples, Fla.; his children, Carla (Greg) of Winnebago, Ill. and Qingdao, China, and Mathias (Patricia) of Decatur, Ill.; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Lisa) of Norman, Okla., Libby of Champaign, Ill., and Carl of Decatur, Ill..

Visitation will be at the Naples Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 8, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Service will be 4:30 to 5 p.m. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in his name to the Museum of Military Memorabilia, Inc., P.O. Box 112800, Naples, FL 34108.
