BRAZEAU, Mo. -- Alvert Dean Hemman of Brazeau died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Perry County Memorial Hospital. He was 76.
He was born Dec. 24, 1932, at Farrar, Mo., son of the late Martin and Mary Versemann Steffens Hemman.
He was married Sept. 6, 1958, to Dorothy A. Schmidt at Trinity Lutheran Church in Altenburg, Mo. She survives in Brazeau.
Other survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Bonnie Hemman of Brazeau, Corey and Lisa Hemman of Altenburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Doug Romig of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Garrett, Lacey, Jordan, Elizabeth and Hilary Hemman and Seth and Elijah Romig; two sisters, Hilda Brueckner Slesak and Oleen Saffell, both of Perryville, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Sue Steffens of Ravendon, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tammy Dee; two brothers, Edgar and Vernold Steffens; and a sister, Alida Roth.
Al was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar, where he held various offices. He was a member of East Perry County Cultural Alliance, Mississippi River Hills Association and the NRA. He was owner/operator of Al's Barber Shop in Cape Girardeau and founder of Hemman Winery in Brazeau. Al enjoyed hunting, fishing, winemaking, woodworking, dartball, gardening, traveling and visiting family and friends.
Memorials are preferred to Salem Lutheran Church, Saxony Lutheran High School or the American Cancer Society.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at Young and Sons East Perry Chapel in Altenburg. He will then be taken to Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar for a 10 a.m. service, with the Rev. Roger Abernathy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
