William Garman "Sonny" Akers, 67, of 127 Lagrange Street, Pulaski, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 1996 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Born in Wythe County on Sept. 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Stuart Roosevelt Akers & Ruth Burnett Akers. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy, and he was owner and operator of Akers Sheet Metal Co., New Jersey. He was a member of the Masonic Temple #136 in Hasbrock Heights, NJ. Surviving are his wife, Nellie Warburton Akers of Pulaski; a daughter & son in-law, Claudia & Robert Hayes of Pulaski; a son, James Stuart Akers of Pulaski; three sisters, Myrtle Wilson of Wilmington, DE, Ina Felts of Max Meadows, and Barbara Arnold of Wytheville; three brothers, Elbert Elwood Akers of Austinsville, John C. Akers of Chula Vista, CA, and Larry C. Akers of Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren, Beth Vitale, A.J. Kaufman, and James Akers Jr.; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Kim Goddard officiating. Burial will follow in Hufford Cemetery, Pulaski. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski. Stevens Funeral Home Inc., Pulaski, is in charge of arrangements.
