Wiley Lee Roy Karl, or Lee, as he was called by family, was born in South Texas where the Karl family originally settled upon coming to Texas. Before marrying Minnie Mason in 1912, he, as well as most of the his family, had resettled to Coryell County.

There, he and Minnie had two children: Curtis Lee Karl, born in 1913, and Clara Opal, born in 1917.

Lee Roy and his brother, Frank Joseph, were killed in a very unfortunate accident near Beasley, Fort Bend County, TX. Lee was buried there as the young widow likely lacked the means to bring him back to Coryell County.

After Lee's death, Curtis and Opal were raised by their mother and her second husband, Joseph D. Scheumack, along with siblings from Minnie and Joseph's marriage.
