Mr. Elmo "Pete" Callander, 82, of Osborne Road, Lakeville, Ind., passed away after a sudden illness at 7:40 p.m. on Tues-day, Dec. 7, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

Mr. Callander was born on Oct. 2, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana area. He was the founder of Southside Trailer Sales, and was still employed in the family business at the time of his death.

On May 28, 1959, in Plymouth, Ind., he married Iona E. Keyser, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Sharon J. (Ronald) Leichty of Argos, Ind., and Pamela D. (Steve) Nykiel of Lakeville; a son, Raymond R. (Marlene) Callander of North Liberty, Ind.; six loving grandchildren, Laura (Jeff) Russell, Damon (Carmen) Leichty, Heather Leichty, Kimberly (Doug) Jordan, Melody Callander and Steffanie Callander; two great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Betty Byers of South Bend.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Emerald Callander.

Pete spent his childhood at Milford, Ind., graduating in the class of 1935. He moved to South Bend and after a short time at Dodge Manufacturing he began his life's work for 63 years at Southside Trailer Sales.

Pete was inducted in the Air Force in July 1943, and was assigned as a cadet to the University of Missouri. He later was transferred to Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas, as a private first class in charge of vehicle maintenance. He was discharged in February 1946.

Pete served as National Mobile Home Dealers Association president in 1954 and again in 1966. Under his leadership in 1954 a show was set up at the Northside Gym featuring 8' wides, which evolved into the Notre Dame R.V. Show, as we know it today. His 1966 presidency established an equitable tax for manufactured housing.

He was a lifetime member-NATO; on the legislative committee that gained approval for 10' homes and travel permits to Florida; Association Secretary; Elkhart show committee member; MDNA presidency that developed electric, plumbing and heating seal; in 1961 started the past presidents club; vice-president of MH Association; 1964 Convention Chairman; State of Indiana Citizen of the Year Award; State of Indiana Distinguished Service Award; First Dealer to be inducted into the Heritage Foundation Hall of Fame; testified before congress in 1975 for ANST119.90-the new HUD code; State of Indiana Certificate of Merit Award; Industry Pioneer Award.

Also received the "Old Timers" award for his service to develop the RV and MH industries; Longevity Award; vice chairman-Heritage Foundation, served on the Zoning Appeals Board of St. Joseph County for 7 Þ years, trying to get equal rights for manufactured housing.

Other activities include St. Joseph Lodge #45 Free and Accepted Mason's; sang with Scottish Rite choir for over 50 years; Indiana Grand Lodge Award of Gold, Freemason 50 years; American Legion Post #777; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, IN., South Bend Consistory, 32, South Bend York Rite, chapter 29, council 82, commandery 13, Orak Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Michigan City, Ind.; volunteer fireman for Centre Township; 35-year member of Epworth United Methodist Church, and sang in the church choir.

Visitation hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 9, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, at the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road and Indiana 23, South Bend. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, in Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 2404 Lincoln Way West, South Bend. Viewing will be held one hour prior to service time in the church. Officiating will be Rev. Claude Joiner, and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

The family request that all memorial contributions be made to the following: the Diabetes Association or to the Shriners Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind.
