Zelma and her sister Melva Mae were 12 and 14 years of age when their mother Etta passed away. She fell upon a piece of farm equipment, lost a baby boy she was carrying, and died from complications.
Life forever changed for the young sisters. Their mother's sister, Alice Holt Brink, was a great support to them and helped as much as she could to help fill the vast void in their lives.
