Zelma Alice was the daughter of William Sylvester Latham 1881 – 1960, and Etta Estes Holt 1878 – 1916.
Her parents were born and raised in a small farming community in Illinois. William and Etta married and had two daughters while living in Green Valley. They left Green Valley, and a large extended family of Lathams and Holts, and moved to Ramsey County North Dakota.
Zelma and her sister Melva Mae were 12 and 14 years of age when their mother Etta passed away. She fell upon a piece of farm equipment, lost a baby boy she was carrying, and died from complications.
Life forever changed for the young sisters. Their mother's sister, Alice Holt Brink, was a great support to them and helped as much as she could to help fill the vast void in their lives.
