Leonard P. Burtness, age 100, of Ulen, Minnesota, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, in the Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.

Leonard was born to Peder and Louisa (Lomsdahl) Burtness on May 5, 1909, in Ulen. He attended country school and graduated with the class of 1927 from Ulen High School. Leonard furthered his education at the NW Agricultural College in Crookston, Minnesota. He farmed with his dad and brothers east of Ulen.

On July 7, 1935, Leonard was united in marriage to Adeline Morken in Ulen. The following year, the couple purchased the farmstead adjacent to Leonard's parents; where they continued to farm and raise their family. At the age of 65, Leonard retired from farming, but continued to live on the farm and rent out the acreage. In 1980, they purchased a house and moved into Ulen. Adeline died in August of 1991, and Leonard remained in the house until moving into the assisted living in the fall of 1996. Leonard has made his home at Viking Manor Nursing Home since 2004.

Over the years, farming was not only a way of life, but a hobby Leonard came to love. He enjoyed life on the farm and all the attributes of it, especially his horses. He spent much time braking and raising horses. In his retirement years, Leonard enjoyed woodworking in his shop. He also had a good sense of humor and was often thought of as a practical joker, especially to family. A life long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, Leonard was active as a deacon and also with the cemetery.

Leonard is survived by one son, Lloyd (Betty) Burtness of Dutton, Montana; two grandchildren, Larry Burtness of Great Falls, Montana and Dan Burtness of Cutbank, Montana, and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Adeline, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Burtness; two brothers, Howard and Halvor Burtness and two sisters, Lila Thorson and Julia Sandstrom.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Funeral Services will be held today, Friday, May 15 at 2:00pm in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen, with visitation one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in the North Bethlehem Cemetery, Ulen.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley, Minnesota.
