Prominent Rochester banker and civic leader Howard R. WERTZBERGER, 93, died at his Franklin United Methodist Community residence Wednes-day.
Born in Chicago to Ardenius M. and Mellie REAM WERTZBERGER, he married Kathleen E. RAYMER Nov. 9, 1929 in Rochester. She survives.
Mr. Wertzberger came to Rochester in 1924. He moved to Greenwood in 1992 and to the Franklin United Methodist Community in the past year. He was one of three original employees of Farmers & Merchants Bank, Rochester, now Indiana Lawrence Bank. He joined Farmers & Merchants in 1935. He was appointed president and chairman of the board in 1968. He retired in 1976.
Mr. Wertzberger, a 1927 graduate of Rochester High School, was Sunday school superintendent, board of trustee member and deacon at Rochester's First Christian Church. He belonged to the Rochester Kiwanis Club, Rochester Masonic Lodge, Fort Wayne Shrine Club and Rochester Elks Lodge
He was president of Northern Indiana Bankers Association. He served on the Fulton County Tuberculosis Association Board and was treasurer of the Fulton County Unit of the American Cancer Society.
Surviving with his wife, at home, are two sons, Joseph D. [WERTZBERGER] and wife Marcia, Greenwood, James H. [WERTZBERGER], Franklin; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding in death was one brother, William [WERTZBERGER].
Arrangements are pending at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Services are tentatively set for Tuesday.

Services for former Rochester resident Howard R. WERTZBERGER, 93, who died Wednesday at his Franklin residence are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
Rev. Woody SLADE will officiate. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Rochester First Christian Church Building Fund.
