He was the son of John C. Hunter and Emma Briscoe Hunter.
On February 3, 1903, he married Alice Baltazzi at Bonnie View, the home of the bride's mother at Hempstead, Long Island, New York.
They were the parents of three children: Samuel Dulany Hunter, Daniel Dulany Hunter and Emma Dulany Hunter.
