Obituary published May 21, 2009 in The Suffolk Times.

Frances T. Huston of Greenport died May 11 at the Shores at Peconic Landing. She was 89.

She was born May 13, 1919, in Tacoma, Wash., to Laurance and Edna (Rowland) Terry. She was raised in Charleston, S.C., and Chicago, Ill., where she graduated from Waller High School and Herzl Junior College.

On May 28, 1944, she married Robert W. Huston, also of Tacoma, in Silver Spring, Md., while he was on leave from active duty during World War II. Most of their advanced education was accomplished together, each supporting the other.

She earned her degree in history from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma in 1948 and her bachelor of fine arts degree, with honors, from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1972.

Ms. Huston worked for Boeing Aircraft in personnel in Tacoma and as a psychometric examiner during her college years. She also expressed her love for the young as a nursery school assistant in Boston, Mass.

From 1972 until retiring in 2002, she operated her own creative design business, Fran Huston Design. Her talent lay in designing attractive and functional spaces that incorporated the real needs of workers. Her business was never without a commission, and covered all aspects of a project from working drawings, to construction oversight, to providing furnishings. Her projects included redesign work for the United Nations and the library of the Boston University School of Theology as well as many private apartments and other building spaces.

She was an active church member both at worship services and as the officer of groups, most recently at the Huntington-Cold Spring Harbor United Methodist Church. She enjoyed designing and making Christmas ornaments, needlepoint, cross-stitching, quilting and singing in choirs. Writing for the Peconic Landing newspaper was a joy for Ms. Huston, as was playing Rummikub, working and playing with her husband and assisting in computer lessons for beginners.

Predeceased by her siblings Margaret (Terry) Schwarz and Robert Terry, Ms. Huston is survived by her husband of 65 years; her daughter, Alyce Hemstreet and her husband, Edward, of East Lyme, Conn.; her sister, Elizabeth Terry Worrell of Medford, Ore.; and her grandchildren, Leslie Hemstreet of Bridgewater, Mass., and Robert Hemstreet and his wife, Rosemary Bianculli, of Manhattan.

A service of celebration was held May 16 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, conducted by Pastor Bradley Ben Burns, and attended by more than 60 of her friends and family.

Having been chair-bound for years, she rose above it. She is remembered particularly for her unique smile, serenity of spirit and elegance.
