ISHPEMING - William "Kelly" Ketola, 88, of *** Bluff St., Apt. ***, and formerly of 337 W. Division St., passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2009, under the loving care of his family and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Kelly was born on July 31, 1920, son of Impi Ketola and Edward Ketola, and spent most of his childhood in Negaunee, where he graduated from high school, class of 1938. After graduation, he joined the military and for the next 12 years served in the Army, Navy Air Force and the National Guard. He protected his country during World War II and was stationed at numerous U.S. bases and in foreign countries including Germany, Panama, Greenland and Borneo.

After his honorable discharge, he returned home to the U.P. and met and married his wife of 55 years, Marjorie (Kucher) Ketola. Kelly was an underground miner for 20 years for the J & L Mining Company at their Tracy mine. Upon the mine's closure, he worked for the Ishpeming School District as a bus driver and custodian for 15 years, retiring in July of 1985.

Kelly enjoyed hobbies and interests in his retirement, especially playing cribbage at both the Ishpeming and Negaunee Senior Centers, where he could still play a darn good game of cards well into his 80s. He was a past member of the senior bowling league and an avid gardener. He liked to spend time in the woods, hunting, fishing and picking blueberries.

Kelly is survived by his wife, Marge, his daughter, Carol (Gerald) Anderson and their children Ryan G. Anderson and Kelly S. Anderson, all of Ishpeming, as well as his son, Peter (Marj) Sarvello and their children Thomas P. Sarvello, Patrick Redman, Jennifer Redman and Jessica (Greg) Johnson, all of Massachusetts. Also surviving is a great-grandson born April 4, 2009, Sonny Peter Johnson, and seven nieces. Kelly also leaves his childhood best friend, Merton Holman of Negaunee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Vivian Dunn, and a son, Thomas E. Sarvello.

Services will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. at the Racine Funeral Chapel, Barnum St., Ishpeming. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the time of the service. A dinner and celebration of Kelly's life will immediately follow at the K.D. Hall, Pine St., Ishpeming. The Racine Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
