Airplane Crash Kills Boyd Man

A 49-year old student pilot from Boyd was killed around 1:40 Sunday afternoon when his single-engine airplane crashed while attempting to land at Bridgeport Municipal Airport.

A. W. Arthur, the single occupant of the aircraft, was pronounced at the scene of the crash by Peace Justice Dawayne Kennedy.

Bill Pedigo, an eyewitness to the mishap, said he was watching Arthur's plane as the craft approached the north end of the runway for the landing. According to Pedigo, who is one of the owners of Bridgeport Flying Service, the craft apparently stalled out just moments before it was to touch down on the runway.

Pedigo said that news reports saying that the airplane's engine had stalled were erroneous. He says that the craft's engine appeared to be working properly at the time of the crash.

A ‘stall' by the plane means that the craft's speed was reduced to the point that the plane failed to stay airborne, Pedigo explained.

He added that a strong wind, into which Arthur was attempting to land the plane, may have compounded the pilot's problems.

Pedigo says that the finding of an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board seems to concur with this conclusion that the stall caused the crash.

Arthur's plane, a Cessna 172, was about 50-60 feet above the ground when the stall occurred, Pedigo said. The aircraft nose-dived into the ground approximately 10 feet from the north edge of the runway. The impact caused the plane to flip over onto its top, coming to rest upside down on the runway.

Arthur apparently died on impact. His body was removed from the wreckage by workers from Hawkins Funeral Home and Bridgeport Volunteer Firemen, who were summoned to the scene to stand by in case of fire.

Arthur had taken off from the airport, where he kept his airplane, about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to reports.

The crash if the first fatal accident recorded at the Bridgeport Municipal Airport, according to airport officials.

The most recent mishap before Sunday's crash occurred in February, when the landing gear on a twin-engine Cessna collapsed during the landing. No one was injured in that accident.

Funeral services for Arthur were held Tuesday afternoon in Boyd. He was an employee of the Superior Meat Co. of Fort Worth.
