He quit high school and got his diploma in later years and went to Kellogg Community College. He went into the Navy in 1952 at the age of 17. He served in Europe. He worked for Eaton Corp. in Marshall, Michigan for 39 years and retired in 2002. He married Judith Lynn Struart on June 22, 1963. They moved to Battle Creek, Michigan. They both worked at Hillcrest Restaurant in Marshall. He was a cook and she was a waitress. They had 5 children.
