CURTON—Margaret (Smith) "Peggy" Dawson Curton died unexpectedly, yet peacefully, while surrounded by many loved ones, Monday, May 11, 2009. She was 88 years old.

Peggy was born March 11, 1921, in Wilton, N.H., to Margaret Dawson and William French Smith. Peggy grew up in Beverly Hills, Calif., and spent her summers in Wilton. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School.

Peggy was preceeded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Curton, on March 17, 2009; her brother William French Smith*; and her sister Mary Smith Shy.

Peggy and Bill met at a USO dance. It was a classic "love at first sight." Their wedding was in Palm Springs, Calif., on Jan. 21, 1950. They were married 59 years. They bought a home in Torrance, Calif., where they lived for over 40 years and raised their four children.

Peggy and Bill loved to travel, from a cruise around the world to an RV trip up the coast. It was on one of their many RV adventures that they discovered Florence. Their RV broke down, and while they waited for parts, they fell in love with the area. Within months they bought a new home and moved from Torrance to Florence in 1994.

Peggy had an avid interest in the law, and loved discussing and challenging her brother on legal issues. She was very proud of his success as Attorney General of the United States in the Reagan administration.

He, too, was proud of her success when she won a case in the U.S. Appellate court.

Peggy was an avid sportswoman. She loved trout fishing, swimming and scuba diving, boating, and even tried snow skiing. She was very creative and artistic. She worked with mixed media art, design, knitting, sewing, crochet, and was particularly fond of gardening and reading. Most of all, she was the eternal optimist, defender of those less fortunate, with a kind word and a genuine smile for everyone she encountered. Her laughter, and gracious giving nature endeared her to so many. She will be missed by all.

She is survived by her son Gregory Curton of Reedsport; daughters Nancy (James) Coyle of Troutdale, Claudette (Michael) Giles of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Denise (Barry) of Reedsport; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m., at Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. Remembrances may be sent to Providence Hospital, Portland, Ore.
