Cecil Rostagno

NORWAY—Cecil L. Rostagno, 80, of Hamilton Lakes, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997 at Manorcare Health Services in Kingsford.

Mr. Rostagno was born Oct. 28, 1916 in Norway, son of the late Joseph and Adeline (Thiebault) Rostagno. He married Beatrice Jolette on April 19, 1941 in Niagara, Wis.

Mr. Rostagno served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 in the Military Police and served four of those years in China-Burma-India Theater. He was discharged as a Lieutenant on Jan. 2, 1946. He is a charter member of the Norvulet Post 4581, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Cecil first served as Waucedah Township Clerk and Supervisor from 1938 to 1941 and then served on the township board of review for 22 years and as supervisor for 44 years.

He was a member of the Dickinson County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee for 15 years with six years as chairman, and a Norway Co-op Canning Association member for 19 years with the last five years as president.

Mr. Rostagno was a charter member of the Norway-Vulcan Civic Club having served as president, vice president and chairman of the Farmer of the Year selection committee. He was named Dickinson County Farmer of the Year in 1971. He was a member of the board of dirctors of the Norway-Vulcan Industrial Development Corp.

He was a 4-H and Conservation Leader for five years and cubmaster with the Cub Scouts for six years.

Mr. Rostagno has been a member of the Community Betterment Study Group, Dairy Herd Improvement Association serving as county treasurer, Michigan Animal Breeders Co-op. Dickinson Soil Conservation District as a cooperator, National Farmer Organization, chairman of the County Agricultural Council, and disaster chairman of the Local American Red Cross.

He was a committee member of the St. Stephen's Parish in Loretto and then was a member of St. Barbara Church in Vulcan.

Mr. Rostagno started as administrator for the Dickinson Area Construction Code commission in 1977 and served for 15 years.

He leaves his wife, Beatrice; three sons, Richard Rostagno of Hamilton Lakes, Bruce (Diane) Rostagno of Iron River, and Wayne (LaShaune) Rostagno of Norway; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Harry (Ruth) Rostagno of New Smyma Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Emmie Boston of Waukesha, Wis. and Adeline Briody of Reedsport, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Rostagno and four sisters, Helen Piro, Mary Bidwell, Sarah Sanford and Chris Bousman.

Visitation will be held Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Miner Funeral Home of Norway. The rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. and parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Prayers will also be recited at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Barbara Church in Vulcan. Fr. James M. Hebein, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.

The Miner Funeral Home of Norway is in charge of arrangements.

Directors of the Norway Co-Op Canning Assosication, Inc, packers of Fancy Beans, Kraut, Norway, Michigan that began in 1936 were: Cipriano Pellegrini, Howard F. Strahl, Cecil L. Rostagno, Fred Johnson, Joseph Paluch, Norman Johns, Walter Lesick, Henry Varda and Walter Breclaw.
The company had between 40-45 seasonal employees. Beans were hand-picked and hand-snapped the 1st year. Later snippers, graders, fillers, blanchers and closing machines were added. Walter Lesnick purchased the 1st bean harvester in 1960.
