On May 15, 2009, Carol Ann Cope, our loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend, passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends. Carol was born to Otis Carnes and Flossie Smith on July 16, 1936, in Murchison. She graduated from Tyler High School in 1955 and attended Tyler Junior College. On November 22, 1961 she married her soul mate, Robert Cope, in Corpus Christi. She was very active in the Beta Sigma Phi movement. Carol helped organize several chapters in Corpus Christi and held numerous positions in these chapters. She was awarded The Order of the Rose by the Beta Sigma Phi International Executive Council and a 25 year pin in grateful acknowledgment of her fulfillment in her own life of the ideals of Beta Sigma Phi.Carol's career started in sales; having worked for Lichtenstein's Department Store and Bill's Shoe Box. After the shoe business, she became involved in the food business as manager of the restaurants and banquets at the Hilton Hotel and Holiday Inn. She then decided to open her own business known as Carol's Fashion Corner, a ladies ready-to-wear store.She was very successful as her motto was "We put the personal touch back into shopping." She became well-known for putting on style shows for numerous organizations such as Beta Sigma Phi and the Corpus Christi Area Convention and Tourist Bureau.After many medical problems, Carol decided to close the store and retire. She and her husband retired and moved to The Colony, to be closer to their two sons and grandchildren.Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Flossie Carnes; step-mother, Gladys Carnes; and brother-in-law, Ronnie Huggins. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robert Cope, of The Colony; son, Mark Cope and his wife, Susan, of The Colony; son, James Cope and his wife Nancy, of Aubrey; and grandchildren, Jordan and Jenna Cope, of The Colony; and Aimee and Adam Cope, of Florissant, Mo.Survivors also include sister, Bobbie Adams and husband Bud, of Franklin; sister, Betty Huggins, of Longview; brother, Kelly Joe Carnes and wife Hazel, of Athens; brother, Mack Carnes and wife Marie, of Lufkin; and uncle, Raymond Smith and wife, Carolyn, of Plano. Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and many close friends. Carol has unselfishly donated her body to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, for research and medical education. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.A memorial service will be held on June 7, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at the LakeWay Church in The Colony.
