Joseph John Gathings was born in Henry County, TN where his father had moved his family from Anson County, NC. In the mid 1830's his father moved there family to Perry County, TN into the area which later split and became Decatur County, TN.

He had the following brothers and sisters: Charles W b 1822-1825, Elmira b 1824, Amanda b 1828, Milton b 1831, Minerva b 1834, Burell or Barnl b 1838 and Paralee or Pearl Lee b 1839 – Joseph's father passed away between 1838 and early 1840. Joseph's mother is listed as Martha (widowed and head of HH) on the 1840 census for Perry County, TN.

In 1854 Joseph John Gathings married Martha McCorkle.

In May of 1864, leaving Martha home with 3 children: C A b abt 1856, J W b abt 1857, and George Franklin b 1859…..

Joseph went to Henderson Tennessee and on May 10 1864 enlisted in the 18th Regiment Tennessee Calvary aka Newson's Regiment for service in the Civil War. Joseph returned home, and he and Martha had 5 more children: Troy R b 1866, Robert L b 1868, Milton S b abt 1870, Manerva A b 1872, and Martha b 1874

Joseph's wife Martha passed away at some point between the birth of their last child and 1877. In Dec 1877 Joseph married Hannah E. Brasher. Joseph and Hannah had one son Joseph Calvin Gathings b 1882. Middle name may be Carner, or another similiar name. We have not found a birth certificate and have found the name listed a variety of names similiar to "Calvin or Carner".

Hannah passed away at some point prior to 1886. On 10 Mar 1886 Joseph married Sarah Ann Wyatt. There were no children born to Joseph and Sarah, but Sarah helped raise the last of Joseph's children.

Other than his civil war service Joseph lived in Decatur County, TN. He passed away 4 May 1913 and was buried at Crawford Cemetery in Decatur County TN.
