VETERAN SHOW MAN SUCCUMBS IN CALIFORNIA
Geo. W. Gilbert Answers Last Roll Call at Age of 96; Funeral to be here

George W. Gilbert, age 96 years, veteran showman, died at his home in San Bernardino, Cal., Thursday, according to a message received today by relatives here. Mr. Gilbert was a pioneer of this community having lived in Kendallville since 1856, until three years ago, when he went to California accompanied by his only daughter, Mrs. Flora Bixler, with whom he had made his home during his declining years. He was a hale and hearty old gentleman, and relatives here received word only last week to the effect that he was enjoying good health. It is presumed that he suffered a sudden attack of heart trouble which caused his demise.

Mr. Gilbert was born in Portage County, Ohio, November 25, 1825. In his early youth he entered the show business, and the older generation of showmen will readily recall him, as he spent a half hundred active years in the business, visiting nearly every country in the world. He retired from the show game about twenty-five years ago, having acquired considerable wealth, the fruit of his labors.

Mr. Gilbert was a prominent citizen of Kendallville for many years and his reminiscences of the white tops were always a delight to his neighbors and friends. He was a member of Kendallville chapter No. 64, R.A.M. and Noble chapter No. 122, O.E.S. of this city.

Surviving relatives are a daughter, Mrs. Bixler, and a brother, Walter Gilbert of this city, age 86, who is the last original survivor of a family of ten children of the Gilbert family. The body will be brought here, and funeral services will be held next Wednesday under the auspices of the Masons Interment, Lake View.
