Jurist. He was a Justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1880 to 1900, serving as Chief Justice from 1897 to 1900. He then served as New Jersey Chancellor from 1900 to 1908.

During the Civil War he held a commission of Lieutenant in the New Jersey State Militia, and helped recruit troops to fight the Rebellion.
