From the April 21, 1909 issue of "The LaFayette Sun":
Mrs. Elizabeth Tucker.
Mrs. Elizabeth Tucker, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. D. Gaines, in LaFayette April 15th, 1909, after an illness of more than seven weeks. Her remains were carried to Macedonia Primitive
Baptist Church, of which she was a consistent member for more than 40 years. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Elder J. T. Satterwhite and Rev. E. M. Stewart, of LaFayette. Her body was then buried at the old Rock Spring Cemetery by the side of her husband.
A great concourse of people gathered to pay the last mourning tribute of respect to this much loved Christian woman. She left six devoted children and sixteen grandchildren to mourn her departure – Mrs. H. G. Webb, of Lineville, Ala., Messrs. John, Joe and James Tucker and Mrs. W. D. Gaines, all of LaFayette, and Mr. Wm. Tucker, of Birmingham.
What nobler heritage could she have left than the pure and blameless life she has lived? Surely by the fires of affliction her noble spirit was purified and made a fit subject for the city whose builder and maker is God; with eyes closed in blindness to the beauties of the world and almost deaf for many years, but she bore all these misfortunes, not as a heavy yoke, but rather as a triumph of the spirit over the flesh. Her briefs and sorrows she never allowed to fall athwart or darken the paths of those around her. So at the end she fell asleep as gently as the shadows fall over a peaceful stream at even tide. The memory of her sweet and patient life will abide with those who knew her as a loving benediction; but who can say but that God gave as a recompense sweetest and closest communing, and that oftentimes her earthly spirit heard the still, small voice and that those sightless eyes beheld sweet heavenly visions of that far fair country, that better place.
From the same issue of "The LaFayette Sun":
The funeral service of Mrs. Elizabeth Tucker was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends at Macedonia Church last Wednesday, services being conducted by her pastor, Elder J. T. Satterwhite, assisted by Rev. Stewart, of LaFayette, after which all that was mortal of this estimable lady was laid to rest in old Rock Spring Cemetery. Macedonia Church has lost one of its most devoted members. She was a good woman and will be sadly missed, but we feel that our loss is her eternal gain.
