Lafayette was the second youngest of eleven children of Helim Olcott and Wealthy Law. He married his first wife, Mary L. Long (1849 - 1886) 29 May 1870 at Decatur, Van Buren, Michigan. They had one daughter Eva (1871 - 1963). He and Mary were divorced and several years later he remarried Luella "Ella" L Wilson (1852 - 1942) 14 Mar 1895 in Broken Bow, Custer Co., Nebraska. He died at the U. S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Veterans, Pacific Branch.
