Tom graduated from the Rayen School in 1942 and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March 1943. He made three transatlantic voyages and one in the Pacific.

On Aug. 3, 1945, he married Ruth Evelyn Gregory of Youngstown while his ship was stationed in Portland.

He was employed by the SP & S Railway in 1946 as agent telegrapher in Bingen, Wash., promoted to supervising agent in Albany, Ore., in 1955, and to supervising agent in Vancouver in 1956.

He resigned from SP & S in 1965 and accepted a position from Weyerhaeuser Co. as vice president and general manager of the Columbia & Cowlitz Railway Co. in Longview.
