Verna was the daughter of Edwin Vernon White and his wife, Dora L. Camp. Her parents were married in Logan county, Illinois in 1898, and were shown as living in Chandlerville, Cass county, Illinois in the 1900 census. Even though Dora was listed as married 1 year, with 1 living child, daughter Verna was not listed. The information concerning the family had some notable errors, so may not have been given directly to the census enumerator.

In 1920, Verna was living with her parents and siblings in St. Louis, Missouri. Shortly after that, she married Floyd Wilson Doyle. According to his obituary, he died of Typhoid about a year after marriage, leaving his young widow, "Helen". About 6 weeks later, son Judson Floyd Doyle was born. She married Oliver Reese Noel in Ottawa, Illinois in 1922, which was also his second marriage. Oliver, Verna, and her son Judson were living in Jacksonville as of the 1930 US census. Twins sons were born to the couple later that year; Donald died at the age of 1 month and 22 days, while David "Larry" Noel lived until 2002. Oliver died in Odessa, Texas during 1973, having been married 4 times.

Verna's son, Lt. Judson Floyd Doyle, was a Flying Fortress bombardier shot down over France during WWII and reportedly captured, but escaped to Switzerland. He was reported in certain Texas newspapers as "Lt. Judson B. Noel", son of Oliver Reese Noel, and shot down over "Germany" in February 1944, and escaped to Switzerland by September 1944. Judson later became an agent for the ATF, and passed away in 1991.
