Donald Milton Bird, 72, of Flintwood Drive died at 4:04 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Vencor Hospital Indianapolis South.

He retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 1987 and was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II where he received several commemorative medals including the purple heart. He was a resident of Texas until after his Army service when he moved to Columbus.

Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home with the Rev. Connie Barr officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to New Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bird was born in Dallas, Dec. 9, 1926, the son of Jeff Augustus and Clara Myrtle Grey Bird. He married Cletha Faye Smith July 15, 1961. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Randall Brian Bird of San Diego; brothers, Jeff Augustus Bird of Los Angeles, and Albert Irvin, Carlton Norris and Franklin Delano Bird, all of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Evelyn Linton, Margaret Norwood, Frances Shivers, Pat Bronstead, Betty Jenson and Mary Gill, all of Fort Worth.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Guy Edward, Earl Alford and David Brewer Bird; and sisters, Myrtle Holzaphel and Iva Bryant.

Funeral for Donald Milton Bird, 72, of Flintwood Drive was conducted Monday at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home with the Rev. Connie Barr officiating. Lydia Bohn was organist.

Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Lovelace, John Mullikin, Mitch Barr, Jim Settle, Bill Campbell and Ray Suhre.

Military graveside rites were conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Mr. Bird died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Vencor Hospital Indianapolis South.
