John M. Annis was a cooper, and later a mechanic, by trade. According to family tradition he drove a team of oxen to Michigan and a great grandson, Ralph Annis had a bell that was worn by one of the animals.
John was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and his death was attributed to a stroke or "paralysis".
