He changed his name to William Compton Bolton from William B. Finch to inherit property from his father, Earl Bolton. His sister, Elizabeth, who is also buried in Congressional Cemetery also changed her surname.
He was buried in the English Burial Ground in Genoa where he had been in command of the United States Navy Mediterranean and Africa Squadron. His body was later returned to the United States where it was reburied in Congressional Cemetery on July 27, 1850.

On June 1, 1842 as William C. Bolton, he married Mary Henrietta Lynch, daughtr of Henry Lynch of New York, at New Brighton, Staten Island, New York. On October 3, 1854, his widow, Mary H. Lynch Bolton married Charles Wilkes at Trinity Church in Washington, District of Columbia. She died at her home in Florence Italy on February 19, 1906. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Lynch Wilkes, age 45 years, on March 5, 1906 at Florence, Italy.

Commodore William Compton Bolton (died 1849), born William Bolton Finch, was an officer in the United States Navy during the mid 19th century. As William Bolton Finch, he commanded Vincennes on her around the world voyage. He changed his name to William Compton Bolton in 1833. Bolton commanded the Pensacola Navy Yard from 1836-1837. In 1848 he was the Commander of the Mediterranean Squadron and later the Africa Squadron in the sloop of war USS Jamestown. He died in 1849. His widow, Mary H. Lynch Bolton, married Charles Wilkes on October 3, 1854. Commodore Bolton sat on Wilkes' court marital board in 1842.
