Lula Flickinger was born in Loyal Oak, Summit County, Ohio, the 10th child of Jacob and Sarah Editha Flickinger. She never married and continued to live in the family home on the opposite corner to the Old Country Store until her death in 1981.

Lula graduated as a nurse from Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
She later became a private duty nurse and companion for some of New York’s wealthiest families.
