Reinterred from Chicago City Cemetery∼CLIFTON, WILLIAM: Co. K, 64th. Virginia Mounted Infantry Enlisted on 9/11/62 at Jonesville, Lee Co. Detached to S. P. Farmer's Co. in Trigg's Battn. Mounted Rifleman 12/5/62. Returned to the 64th 2/28/63. Taken POW 9/9/63 at Cumberland Gap. Sent to Camp Douglas 9/24/63 where held until he died 1/3/64 of chronic diarrhea. He is buried in grave 139

The "Confederate Mound" Section at Oak Woods Cemetery is flanked between Section K1 and K2. The land was purchased by the Federal Government in 1867 to accommodate the Confederate casualties from Camp Douglas. The soldiers and sailors were originally buried in the old Chicago City Cemetery but in 1867 were interred to Oak Woods Cemetery without tombstones. The result of fund raising by several Confederate Associations ended in a monument being erected in July 1893 in honor of the POW's who lost their life at Camp Douglas.

The memorial sits on a slight incline of grass, is 46' tall and is a bronze figure of a Confederate infantry soldier, arms folded across his chest, hat in hand, and kit hanging at his side, standing atop a square Georgia granite column. The monument is surrounded by cannons, cannon balls, and a flag pole. The Confederate Mound was dedicated on Memorial Day on May 30, 1895 with President Grover Cleveland and his cabinet in attendance.

Although there are only 4200 names listed on the memorial, there are an estimated 6000 Confederate soldiers and sailors buried around the monument. They are buried in coffins in concentric circular trenches. Behind one of the cannons in a single row are twelve Union soldiers buried who were guards at Camp Douglas. Their markers read "Unknown U.S. Soldier".
