Alton Eugene Turner Sr., 77, of Vevay, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

He was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Switzerland County, the son of Paul J. and Elsie Mae Phillips Turner. He was raised in Switzerland County, where he lived most of his life. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and was a prisoner of war for six weeks. He was a retired civil service employee, retiring from Jefferson Proving Ground on Oct. 3, 1991, after 30 years of service. Early in life, he worked at Chainbelt, Rexnord, Reliance, Rotary Lift, Seagram's Distillery and Markland Dam. He had farmed all of his life and attended the Fredonia Baptist Church when he was growing up. He was a member of Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396. He enjoyed watching TV and playing the harmonica.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Jean Turner; one daughter, Rita L. Jones of Quercus Grove; four sons, Alton E. Turner Jr. of Vevay, Danny Turner and Anthony Turner of Vevay and Dale Turner; one sister, Pauline O'Day of Spring Hill, Fla.; one brother, Nelson L. Turner of Vevay; 10 grandchildren; two step grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Ray Turner; his parents; and one grandson.

The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Aberdeen. Military honors were conducted graveside by Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396.
