Jonathan Calvin Harvey born Dec. 16, 1841, died Mar. 11, 1914. Born in Giles Co. Va., now Summers Co. W.Va. He was the son of Isaac N. and Elizabeth Comer Harvey of English descent. At age twenty, Calvin enlisted in the Confederate Army, C. 1, 60th Regt. Va. Infantry, Aug. 31, 1861 at White Sulphur Spgs.
Calvin fought in many battles in faraway places, such as Cumberland, Md. And the fierce Battle of Richmond, Va. Where almost every man was wounded or killed. He and William B. Basham were two who were not injured, but they almost starved to death.
Calvin was married Jan. 19, 1864 to Mary Harvey his double first cousin. Their fathers were twin brothers, and their mothers twin sisters. Calvin's parents were Isaac Newton Harvey and Elizabeth Comer Harvey and Mary Harvey's parents were Jacob White Harvey and Sarah Catherine Comer Harvey.
Calvin and Mary were Christians. He was a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church. His wife baked the unleavened bread for sacrament.
Calvin was a very prosperous farmer, timber and sawmill man. He owned a 90 acre farm of beautiful land on the head waters of Little Bluestone River. He had a sawmill, planning mill, made furniture such as poster beds, cupboards and tables and chairs. He also built a loom for his wife to weave cloth for clothes, blankets and coverlets for their beds.
Calvin had a blacksmith shop to shoe horses and mend farm tools, a tannery to make leather for moccasins for family and neighbors. He owned a cane mill. He owned a cider mill for making cider to drink and to make vinegar. He was a candle maker, his mold made 8 candles at once.
Calvin and Mary had seven children: Estaline, Catherine, Elizabeth, Jonas, Virginia, Henderson, and Sarah.
Calvin's mother died Jan. 4, 1887. His father, getting old, gave his home and 168 acres of land to Calvin to take care of him. Calvin's wife, Mary died Sept. 18, 1902. Calvin then married Ruthy Griffith and taking his father with him, moved to Beckley and into grocery business. He gave his lovely home and farm to his daughter Sarah and her husband, Charles Cooper.
Calvin died March 11, 1914 and was buried on his first farm near Streeter, W.Va.
