Rose Ethel was the third oldest child born to Edward Harvey Cantrell and Sarah E. Hayes. Her siblings were; Martha, Sherman, William, Verda, Edward, Clara, Florence and Elbert.
They were born in Licking, Texas Co. Missouri. Edward Harvey brought his family in 1903, to Lester, Washington after his wife died,(1901).
Rose and her older sister worked as cooks in the logging camp while her father and older brother worked in the woods. One day, Rose put on several layers of her clothes, took her umbrella, (though the sun was shining) and ran away to elope. She married Otis George Crooks. He died just three years later of pneumonia, but Rose had a daughter, named Sarah Edna, from this marriage.
Later, Rose married Joseph Edward Herron. This was a very happy marriage. They had a son named John Edward.
The greatest early sadness for Rose was the unexpected death of her daughter. Before her death Edna had married a Royce Waldrep and had two children, Royce Jr. and Sharon.
Later, in 1956 Ed developed stomach cancer and died. Rose never remarried but lived to a good age and stayed close to her sisters and her son and grandchildren. Rose's personality was very distinctive. She smiled and laughed a lot and told of her mischievous adventures as a child.
One story told of her sneaking down stairs to the basement to stuff herself with pickles from the pickle barrel. One stretch too far and she fell into the pickle barrel. She had to be rescued. Shorter and rounder than her sisters, she was known to start over on seconds after desert at the Thanksgiving table.
She could have a sharp tongue and said her piece openly which unfortunately caused some problems with some of her family. In her later years she fell off a stool and injured herself, but she continued to drive her car until she was in her late eighties. Her remains are buried next to her husband, Ed.
