James Glann Hazard was the son of Edward Allan and Elizabeth Ann (Rowley) Hazard and was born at Hazardville (now Blatchley), Windsor Township, Broome County, New York. He had a half-brother Roswell Higley Hazard; and full siblings: Edward James Hazard, Sally Ann Hazard, Edward Perry Hazard, Sally Hazard, Persis Viola Hazard, Emma Cornelia Hazard, Franklin Fayette Hazard, Hannah Jane Hazard, John LeRoy Hazard and Olive Ann Hazard.

Jim, or J.G., as he also was called, was the grandson of Edward Hazard and Deborah (Ballard) Hazard.

Jim Hazard married Mary L. Stoddard November 12, 1865 at or near Great Bend, Pennsylvania. They had three children: James Henry, George William and Cora Myrtle.

Mary died in 1874. After moving to Saguache, Colorado, Jim married Eliza (Braun) Jenner Moon, the mother of his daughter-in-law, Clara. This marriage lasted only a brief time.
