FRED TOWN, SPANISH WAR VETERAN, DIES
Fred Skeele Towne, former Grand Island boy and a veteran of the Spanish-American war, died Saturday in the National Soldiers Home, at Sawtell, California, his mother, Mrs. Josephine Towne, long time resident of this city, has been advised.
Born May 26, 1878, the deceased came to Grand Island with the family in 1886, following the residence of the family, for a period of seven years, in Fillmore county. He received his education in the Grand Island schools, and, for six years, served the Daily Independent as one of its carrier force. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, he enlisted in Co. M, of the 2nd Nebraska Volunteer Infantry, with which he served. He was united in marriage to Amanda Smith, April 3, 1926, at Chicago.
Surviving besides his wife and mother are two sisters, Mrs. F. E. Slusser, of Lincoln, and Mrs. Taylor Withrow, of Norfolk. A sister, Mrs. Mark Knight preceded him in death, at Douglas, Arizona, in 1918.
Funeral services were held at Sawtell, with burial in the National cemetery, there.
