Jeremiah Huffman was born 1828 in Kentucky. Family lore claims that Jeremiah moved west (prior to being of age) when his family died during an epidemic). Our first record of him is in Jackson, Macon County, Missouri, on March 31, 1853, when he married Nancy Pollard Tate, daughter of Simpson Tate and Lucy Dawson. Nancy was born May 11, 1837 in Adair, Missouri, and died January 1918 in Caldwell, Sumner, Kansas.

In the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census, Jeremiah and Nancy were residing in Macon County, Missouri. In the 1880 U.S. Census, Jeremiah and Nancy were residing in Falls Township, Sumner County, Kansas.

Jeremiah and Nancy had twelve children: Lucy, Charles, James, John Yancy, Ed, Mary, George, Frances, Arminta, Alberta, Bertha and Lolah.
