Captain Alfred Ernest Warmington.
The Royal Irish Regiment.
6th Battalion.

Killed in action during the attack on the South Dublin Union, at the beginning of the Easter Rising, on Monday 24th April 1916.

Son of Alfred Warmington and Ellen Sophia née Hornibrook Warmington, of Naas, Co. Kildare.
They were married in Kinsale, Co. Cork, in 1871.

He went to South Africa in the 1890's and when there enlisted in Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry during the Boer War.
He was action at Spion Kop.
He later joined the Cape Police force in 1902.
On his return to Ireland, he joined the Great Southern & Western Railway.
At the commencement of WW1, he enlisted, and served in France.
In early 1916, he was posted to Richmond Barracks, Dublin, and it was from there that he led his platoon to attack a group of Volunteers who had taken over the South Dublin Union.

Immediately before Alfred's death, his colleague
Captain Alan Livingston Ramsay
was killed in the same incident

in the 1901 census, his father Alfred Warmington was a 53 year old Bank Manager working for the Munster & Leinster Bank, living at Main Street, Naas, Co. Kildare, He had been born in England. He on his own, no member of his family was present.

In the 1911 census, the Warmington family were living at Naas, Co. Kildare.
present were,
Alfred Warmington, aged 63, a Bank Manager, married, born in England,
Eleanor Sophia, his wife, aged 58, married, born in Co. Cork,
They had been married 39 years and had 5 children, all still alive,
Eileen Mary Irwin, daughter, aged 34, a widow.
She had been married 10 years, and had 1 child,
Ivan Irwin, grandson, aged 11, born in Co. Dublin,
Alfred Ernest Warmington, son, aged 33, the Colonial ?? Service, born in Queen's Co. [he was actually 37 years old.]
a domestic servant was also present.

Death Certificate.
Alfred Ernest Warmington, aged 39, married, a Captain in the Royal Irish Regiment, died at the Workhouse at the South Dublin Union, on 24 April 1916.
The cause of death was Gun Shot Wounds.
His death was registered on 22 May 1916, by a member of staff of the South Dublin Union.

His name is included on
1916 Easter Rising Memorial Wall
in Glasnevin Cemetery.
