James Maurice Thompson was a famous Indiana author. He wrote Alice of Old Vincennes, several books on archery, and Civil War poetry. He was a scout for the 63rd GA Inf, CSAA novelist who wrote a book of poems, Hoosier Mosaics; then Sylvan Secrets, followed by Bird Notes, The Tallahassee Girl and The Witchery of Aachery. Mr Thompson began writing for publication first in 1873.

He served in the Confederate Army in 1862 and did hard scout duty.

Maurice Thompson, of Crawfordsville, whose life for several days past has been hanging on a slender thread, died on Friday morning last. He was one of Indiana’s greatest authors, and his productions commanded great attention in all parts of the United States. His last production was “Alice of Old Vincennes,” and it met with much favor in the literary world.
