Bell, Alvin E. Jr.

Alvin E. Bell, Jr. died Monday June 23, 2003, in St. Anne Mercy Hospital at the age of 79. He was the fourth of five children to Rev. Alvin and Nola Bair Bell and attended Monroe School, Robinson Jr. High and Scott High School. Mr. Bell graduated from Wittenberg College, Springfield, OH. He was employed in the finance department of Willys Overland and American Motors Jeep Plant 31 years, where he received the American Motors Community Relations Medal in 1970.

He was a US Army veteran serving in the ETO with Patton's 3rd Army in the 80th Infantry Division during World War II where he received the Purple Heart. Mr. Bell was a life member of Chapter 27 DAy, Conn-Weissenberer American Legion Post 587 and 80th Division Veterans Assoc.

Mr. Bell served on the Board of Directors of the Lucas County Retarded Citizens Association and was president from 1969-1971. In 1987, he and his wife, Georgia were honored by the LARC for distinguished services benefiting the retarded and in 1990 he was awarded the Distinguished Volunteer by the United Health Services, Mr. Bell was named as a National Fraternalist by the Lutheran Brotherhood Fraternal Association in 1991.

He was one of the first Cub Scouts in Toledo and for many years served as Committeeman and Scout Master of Troop 12 BSA. Mr. Bell was also a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and was referee in the Lutheran Bantam Basketball League 18 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Alvin and Nola Bell; sister, Ruth Harris and brother, George (Ted) Bell. Mr. Bell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Georgia; sons, Gene (Marj), Wayne (Liz) and Ricky; grandchildren, Jason, Monica, Peter and Michael; great-grandchild, Taryn; brother, Paul (Pat) Bell and sister, Lois (George) Cole.

Friends may call at the Foth-Dorfmeyer Mortuary, 3815 Sylvania Ave. at Woodley Rd. (between Monroe St. & Talmadge Rd.) Thursday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Glenwood Lutheran Church. Interment Toledo Memorial Park. The family suggests memorial tributes be made to Glenwood Lutheran Church Foundation. Conn-Weissenberger American Legion Post 587 services will be held Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the mortuary.
