September 3, 1891
MITCHELL--.Robert Mitchell was born July 14, 1809, in Kessingland, Suffolk, England, and died in Geneva, New York, July 31, 1891. He was one of seven children; six came to this country, he himself coming in 1830. All are now dead, except a sister in England and Mrs. Newson, of Geneva. Mr. Mitchell settled in Williamson, New York, but removed to Geneva in 1831, where he remained. Having learned the shoemaker's trade in the old country, he followed it in the new, working for himself for some years. He entered into partnership with Mr. Hayward, and for many years did an extensive business in the shoe and leather trade. His family, consisting of his wife, three sons, and two daughters, are all dead, except Mrs. A. J. Swallow, of Geneva. Brother Mitchell was converted in England and joined the Wesleyan church. On coming to this country he united with the Methodist Episcopal church. For several years he was a trustee; was also steward and class-leader a long time. For sixty years he was a member of the church. The past year he had been failing in health, but attended to his business until within about ten days of his death, when he was obliged to retire to his home, where he passed painlessly and peacefully to his reward.
