Harriett was married in 1852 in Portsmouth, Virginia to James H. Warner a young U. S. Naval Engineer. Her husband served on the U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota. He served in the U. S. Navy until Virginia left the former union. James resigned from the U. S. Navy and entered the Confederate Navy as an engineer. James was sent to several locations in the south as Chief Engineer including New Orleans. He was finally sent to Columbus, Georgia where he was in charge of the Naval Iron Works there on the Chattahoochee River.
