EAST WENATCHEE - Irene C. Spurgeon, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 1996, in Highline Convalescent Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born to Alexander and Ida (Johnson) McKenzie on July 13, 1899, in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Orient, Wash., in 1910.
She married James H. Spurgeon in Colville May 21, 1917, and resided there until 1929, when they moved with their four children to Wenatchee.
Mrs. Spurgeon was active in civic affairs. In the 1930s she was president of the Wenatchee City Council of PTA, president of the Navy Mothers Club during World War II and served as chaperone of the Apple Blossom princesses in the 1950s. She was a longtime member of the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.
Mrs. Spurgeon is survived by her daughter, Mrs. William (Faye) Osborne of Wenatchee; one son, Ken Spurgeon of Lake Chelan; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; two sons, Dale and Stan; and one grandson.
A private family interment will be held on Thursday at the Wenatchee Cemetery with a memorial service to take place at a later date.
