United States Army Technical Sergeant Acuff was a crew member on "Big Emma", a combat Liberator with the 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bombardment Group, when it crashed into a mangrove swamp near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Sergeant Acuff and 11 members of the crew were killed.

Morris was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
