Arthur was the son of Johanna A Whalen and Cornelius E. Buckley, born in Natick, MA.

He studied landscape architecture and became well-known for his work, designing the grounds for Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe's property in Connecticut and other sites including Harrybrook Park in New Milford.

In 1940, Arthur married Marguerite "Peg" Stack of Needham, MA and soon after, they moved to New Milford, CT where he established his landscaping and garden center business.

Arthur and Peg had 5 children and raised them with the help of lifelong friend, Carrie Moffit. Arthur was the kind of father who didn't meddle too much, but found ways to rouse the troops when needed. Once a year in the wee hours of the morning, he would light a match under the fire detector in their house. This woke everyone and a fire drill ensued. Less alarming but equally surprising to his teen-aged daughter, Arthur once traded landscaping design work for a horse she had been wanting.

Many people recognized Buckley's Garden Center on Route 7 in New Milford, and the lovely 100 acre property on which it and the family home were located. When they weren't helping with the business, his children were free to roam up into the hills behind the house. His grandchildren have fond memories of playing in the barn and resting in the cool shade of the trees.

In his later years, Arthur suffered a series of strokes and passed from us in 1986. He is remembered for his accomplishments as a landscape designer and for his good character. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, their 5 children, and 3 grandchildren.

May he rest in peace.
