In 1860, he was a farmer living in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service in Union County July 30, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, but did not join the regiment until September 3. He is listed as absent without leave to date September 19, 1864, the day of the 3rd battle of Winchester, but returned to duty. He was wounded in the left knee at the battle of Cedar Creek October 19, 1864, forcing amputation of the leg at the thigh. (Surgeons used a flap surgical technique.) He discharged by surgeon's certificate April 10, 1865.

He died in Union Township, Mifflin County, from a "cerebral hemorrhage" with "degeneration of blood vessels" a contributing factor
