James Newton, one of the well known and popular merchants of Medina, is located on Liberty street, just west of the public square. he carries a full line of staple and fancy groceries, provisions and fruits and vegetables in their season. He was born in Hinckley township, this county, January 9, 1853, and has always lived in the state. He is the son of F.G. and Sarah Oviatt Newton. For six years he was a member of the board of education of Medina village. His wife before her marriage to Mr. N was Rowena Morris, of Sharon, this county. She is the daughter of George and Rebecca Waltman Morris. Mr. and Mrs. Newton are the parents of five children, two boys and three girls, viz: Ernest J., Minnie, Allie, Herbert and Bessie. In politics Mr. Newton is a staunch republican, and at the convention of that party, held in June, 1897, he was nominated for the office of county treasurer, after one of the most spirited contests in the history of the party in this county, there being seven candidates. The election of Mr. N in November is a foregone conclusion.
