Ray enlisted in the US Navy during WWII and served in the South Pacific fighting the Japanese. His ship (an LST) was sunk during a typhoon in the South China Sea.

After the war, Ray took up farming on a small farm near Killbuck Ohio. He then moved his family to Prescott Arizona where one of his Navy buddies (Bill Storm) had a ranch. He opened up a refrigeration sevice. A few years after that he moved his family to El Paso Texas and again opened up a refrigeration service.

Hazel had a son Ralph by her first marriage to Jack Perrin and two daughters, Patty and Lois with her husband Ray.
