Monsignor John J O'Brien, a longtime educator and the first superintendent of the Worcester Diocesan School Department, died in Mercy Hospital after a short illness.

At the time of his death he left a sister-in-law, Claire M O'Brien of Springfield. He was born in Springfield, son of Patrick J and Mary G Roche O'Brien. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield, Holy Cross College and St. Mary's Theological Seminary, Baltimore.

Msgr. O'Brien was ordained in 1938 and began ministry at Sacred Heart Church in Holyoke for seven years. He also directed the parish grammar school and high school. He was then stationed at St. Bernard's in Fitchburg, where he was also headmaster at both parish schools. In 1950 he became the first superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Worcester. In 1955 he also took on added responsibility as headmaster of St. Peter's High School. In 1964, Monsignor was name pastor of St. John's Church. In 1966 he retired as superintendent of schools. Then in 1968 he became pastor of Bernard's Church, where he served until retiring in 1983. He was also head master at St. John-Ascension Grammar School and later headmaster of Sacred Heart Academy.
