Patrick James Murray, 59, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 22, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Leo and Rose Murray.

Patrick is survived by two sons, Devin Patrick, 25, and Collin Patrick, 23; a sister, JoAnn Borzy and her husband, Michael, of Portland, Oregon; two nephews, Michael and Charlie; and a niece, Kate.

Additionally, he is survived by angel, friend and the mother of his sons, Sandi Murray.

A devoted father and friend, Patrick enjoyed people and truly never met a stranger.

For 29 years he was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and credits the spiritual path of that organization with saving and changing his life and leading him on a lifelong spiritual journey. He took great pleasure in helping anyone who needed it and was a good friend and blessing to many. Most who knew him will remember him as a great prankster, seldom missing an opportunity to make someone laugh. Patrick loved nature and wildlife and loved being in the middle of it in his kayak. However, there was nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with his sons, whom he valued and loved deeply.

In recent years, Patrick was a practitioner of massage therapy, a vocation well aligned with his interest in people and in being of service.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the many caring health care professionals at both Martha Jefferson Hospital and the University of Virginia who devoted their time and energy during Patrick's illness. A very special Thank You is sent to all members of the Hospice of the Piedmont for the professional, caring compassionate care provided to Patrick. It was through their guidance and support that the family was able to care for Patrick at home where he was most comfortable.

The family invited Patrick's friends to join in a celebration of his life during a memorial service held Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Chapel at Akasha, located at 6656 Mountain Light Place. A reception was held following the service.
