James Madison Monroe Lincoln was born 17 Nov 1840 in Marshall County, VA, now W.VA. to James M. Lincoln and Jane B. Williams. We obtained James' father's name from James MM's death certificate - his son, Chalkley, provided the information that James Madison Monroe Lincoln's father's name was James M. Lincoln.

Before 1850 James went to Delaware County, Ohio with his parents. In 1850 he was living with Andrew Young; James was listed as Madison Lincoln on the census. In 1856, guardianship papers were filed listing his father as Robert Lincoln, who died in Delaware County, Ohio. No date of death for Robert. Jay Dyer was appointed guardian for James. We do not know why there is a discrepancy in his father's name - James MM's son indicated James' father as James M. but the guardian papers in 1856 indicates Robert Lincoln.

In 1850 his mother Jane B. Lincoln married Lewis Searls and both Lewis and Jane are listed in the guardianship papers. Between 1850 and 1860, James moved to Clark Co., Illinois and is listed on the census as Madison M. Lincoln. Between 1860 and 1863, James moved to Athens County, Ohio.

On 26 June 1863, he joined the Union Army at Big Run, Athens Co., Ohio. He was assigned to Co. L, 1st Reg., Ohio Heavy Artillery volunteers. On 2 Aug 1863, James was transferred to Co.K, 2nd Reg., Ohio Heavy Artillery volunteers. He was mustered out on 23 Aug 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. James sustained an injury at Munfordville, Hart Co., Kentucky in Dec 1863.

He married Louisa Williams on 26 Feb 1863 in Athens Co., OH. To this union was born:

- Florida Gertrude b. 10 Feb 1864 in Athens Co., died 9 Oct 1888
- Chalkley Sherman b. 2 Aug 1866 in Delaware Co., Oh, d. 1 Mar 1942 in Presque Isle Co., MI
- Elva "Elvie" b. 30 June 1868, Delaware Co., d. 16 May 1886 in Delaware Co.
- Charles M. b. 11 Nov 1870 Delaware Co., d. 11 Feb 1886 Athens Co.
- Edward b. 11 Nov 1871, Delaware Co., d. 22 Nov 1934, Mason Co., MI.

Louisa Williams Lincoln died 26 Feb 1872 in Orange Township, Delaware Co., Ohio and is probably buried there. To date we have not been able to find a grave site for her.

James married Malissa Day Wallace on 6 Oct 1872 in Delaware Co., Ohio. To this union was born:

- Lewis Bert b. 3 Aug 1873, in Delaware Co., d. 21 Jun 1948, Licking Co., OH
- James Madison Monroe Lincoln, Jr., b. 5 Jan 1876, Delaware Co., d. 18 Jun 1877, Delaware Co.
- Louisa F., b. 12 Apr 1877, Delaware Co., d. aft 1901.

Malissa Day Wallace Lincoln died 7 May 1891 in Delaware Co., OH.

Some time between 1894 and 1895, James moved to Casey, Clark Co., IL according to his Civil War pension, # 767267. After Sept 1906, James moved to Branch Twp., Mason Co., MI to be with his sons Chalkley and Edward where he died on 30 Mar 1908. He is buried in the Tallman Cemetery, Tallman, MI.

**June 13, 2010 - apparently James' grave site is unmarked - a FAG website volunteer searched the cemetery, but could not find a headstone for James.

At the time James moved to Clark Co., IL in 1895, his mother Jane B. Williams Lincoln Searls was living in Johnson Twp., Clark Co., IL, along with his half brothers Aden and Prosper Searls. Submitted by T.L. Galbraith
